The craftsmanship of the Arixa Clarinets barrels

Dear friends,

With this article we open the blog of the Arixa Clarinets artisanal workshop.

To start, I would like to thank very especially all our friends and collaborators. Their help has really made our dream come true.

I would very much like my blog to become useful to all those clarinetists who, like myself, have passion for the clarinet. I would like it to be an interesting resource to help us improve continuously as clarinet players. In my blog, you will be able to find different articles on barrels, bells, ligatures or reeds; articles about instruments; interviews to interesting musicians; and many other themes related to the clarinet world.

In this article I would like to explain to you how Arixa Clarinets was born and tell you the story of how we have got to where we are now.

How was Arixa Clarinets born

It all started four years ago with a group of four clarinet students of the Professional Conservatory of Music in Menorca.

I was teaching them a subject called The relatives of the clarinet. The main aim of the subject was to be able to play the Eb and bass clarinets in different types of ensembles. At the end of term, the students had to present a final project. Each of them chose a theme to work on and one of them was clarinet construction.

Very soon I discovered that we know very little about our instrument, the clarinet. It just so happened that in Menorca there was an elderly gentleman that had made different clarinets with Menorcan woods. I really admire people who can make real works of arts using very rudimentary techniques.  Added to it was the fact that I am an intellectually restless person and I would like to contribute to the clarinet world.

This became the perfect combination to carry on investigating and, in a few months’ time, I was already doing the first tryouts. The following year, as a clarinet professor at the Professional Conservatory of Music in Menorca, I suggested the idea of teaching a subject called Applied investigation to the clarinet. This subject was the germ for the first tryouts of our barrels with a group of students –by the way, these first tests took place in a garage. Coincidence?-

Our marvellous trip

Work, effort, persistence, struggling, dreams, excitement, disappointment, learning, happiness… These are some of the words that have accompanied us during these years of investigation and hard work. They have been very intense years, but the personal satisfaction for having been brave enough to start this journey and being able to observe the continuous evolution of our barrels have been our best reward.

I would like to thank very especially the great Spanish clarinetists that have given us their valuous opinion and whose excellence has made us improve day by day. Their advice has enabled us to present:

Unique and handmade barrels with soul.
Barrels that adapt to specific musical performances, such as a soloist, in an orchestra or ensemble, balancing the latest technology and the finest traditional craftsmanship techniques, always with respect for the environment.

We are very excited to make our contribution to the clarinet world. From our experience and compromise with you, we will work on a daily basis to craft barrels to enhance your sound.

Best wishes and thank you for subscribing!
